JUST WHAT IS A SMALL BUSINESS?

That depends on who you ask, and its certainly not what you think.According to the Small Business Administration, 99.7% of all businesses in America are “small businesses.”Even the government doesn’t have a simple definition. They analyze each company based on an industry by industry basis, so what you might think is a big business really is not. Are you in the construction business and have a little over $30 million in annual revenue? Sounds pretty big, but no, you are a small business.

Are you a manufacturer, and have 450 employees? Big business? No, you are a small business. Do you fish for salmon and bring in $20 million a year in revenue? Small business. Are you a gold miner with 1,200 employees? Small business. Do you drill oil and gas wells and have 900 employees? Still a small business. Do you have a candy factory manufacturing chocolate candy with 950 employees? Small business. Do you own a drug store that generates $25 million per year? Small business.

In fact, the vast majority of businesses in America have less than 20 employees, and account for 89.6% of all businesses.

How about businesses that are just run by one person, the owner? They account for 23 million American businesses. All of that leaves just three tenths of one percent of all American businesses that are classified as big business.
